What is the Feldenkrais Method®?

The Feldenkrais Method® is a form of somatic education that uses gentle movement and directed attention to improve movement and enhance functioning.

We improve our well being when we fully use ourselves. Our intelligence depends upon the opportunity we take to experience and learn on our own. This self learning leads to full, dynamic living.

Through this method, you can increase your ease and range of motion, improve your flexibility and coordination, and rediscover your inner capacity for graceful, efficient movement. These improvements will often generalize to enhance funcitoning in other aspects of your life. The Feldenkrais Method teaches through movement how we can improve our capabilities to function in our everyday lives.

The Feldenkrais Method® is expressed in two parallel forms:

Awareness Through Movement and Functional Integration.

Both forms are based on principles of physics, biomechanics and an empirical understanding of the learning of human development.

In group classes, called Awareness Through Movement, the Feldenkrais Teacher verbally leads you through a sequence of movement in basic positions: sitting or lying on the floor, standing or sitting in a chair. The lessons consist of comfortable, easy movements that gradually evolve into movements of greater range and complexity. These are precise structured movement explorations that involve thinking, sensing, moving and imaging(reaching, standing, lying to sitting).

A lesson can last from 60 to 90 minutes.

Functional Integration is usually performed with the student sitting or lying on a table in standing position. Functional Integration is a hand-on form of tactile, kinsthetic communication. The practitioner communicates, nonverbally, on how you organize your body and, through gentle touching and movement, conveys the experience of comfort, pleasure and ease of movement while you learn how to recognize your body and behavior in new and more expanded functional motor patterns.

The FI Practitioner develops a lesson that is custom tailored to your unique configuration at that particular moment, relating to the intention or need you have.

A lesson lasts 60 to 75 minutes.

Pillows, rollers and blankets can be used to support persond body configuration or to facilitate certain movements.
